Chest and nasal congestion are caused by inflammation in the lungs and/or sinuses due to an infection. The most common infections that develop into chest and nasal congestion are the common cold and bronchitis. The common cold typically affects the upper-respiratory system, including the chest, nasal passages and throat. Bronchitis, on the other hand, is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, or airways.

The common cold is not curable, but the symptoms are treatable. Talk with your doctor before using any herbal remedy to treat a medical condition. Ginger should not be used by people with gallstones, gallbladder disease or diabetes. Anyone who has a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, or heart problems should not take any herbal supplements that affect the thinning of the blood. Ginger may interact with heart medications, aspirin, warfarin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen.

Whatcha do:

Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes and strain. For more anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant benefits add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed.

What Does “Clean” Smell Like To You?

I tend to believe people think “clean” clothes smells like laundry detergent or fabric softener and I remember when those smelled clean and fresh to me too. For several years now I have cut out all chemicals from my life so when I smell standard grocery store laundry soap or fabric softer my head pounds and I actually get nauseated.

After all, it smells like horrible, strong chemicals to me!

On the other hand, when I wash my laundry with soap nuts, they come out smelling like … nothing. Yep, that’s what I said; Nothing – and I LOVE that smell! To me, smelling like nothing is such a fresh feeling.

I know there are no chemicals all over my clothes and that is a comforting feeling!

I buy my soap nuts by the 5 pound bag and grind up a couple cups at a time in my Vitamix. I toss a scoop of the powder in my laundry (and because it’s soap nuts you don’t need fabric softener) and my laundry comes out clean, smelling like a whole lotta nothing! And you’d think living in Colorado I’d need fabric softener but these little nuts do the trick and I don’t have static to deal with. You can also put a few drops of your favorite essential oil in your wash if you simply have to have some kind of scent 😉

Once you go chemical free, you’ll never go back!

*** One thing I have to mention is that dogs seem to like the scent and/or flavor of the soap nuts powder. My dog opened the top of my container and ate some of it and got sick so please BEWARE around dogs and other animals! ***

Green Tea – The Amazing *SUPERFOOD*

The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. Today, research shows green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells, lowers bad cholesterol levels, improves immune function, prevents tooth decay and can help you burn more fat!!!

How to get more in your diet: Aim for 1-3 cups a day.  Green tea now comes in many different flavors (my favorite flavors are Chai and Mint!!). I almost always have a cup of hot green tea with my breakfast. I also keep a few flavors of decaffeinated green tea around to sip before bedtime. Enjoy it hot or iced or use it in place of water to blend into smoothies! Add Stevia or another natural low-calorie sweetener if desired.
